Obama allows whitehouse to not only use open source to power whitehouse.gov, but to release their code as open source?  So. good.

Article comparing Android to Maemo... I don't want to have to hack my next phone to be able to use it how I want, so I'm definitely leaning towards Maemo

It's a little counterintuitive to think that it's good for the economy to use free software instead of paying a company like Microsoft millions of dollars of licenses.  I think the benefit comes from how open source lets you leverage what you have...
