Interesting article on eating habits... they focus on movie theaters, but I'd imagine it probably applies to many other situations where eating habits are formed (e.g. late night/afternoon snacking)...
Just baby fat?
"In a 2006 study that surveyed the parents of obese children, only one-half recognized that their child was overweight, and less than one-third said they were "worried" about their child's weight. In another survey, only 38 percent of parents had taken steps, or were planning to take them, to help their obese child lose weight.

Pig-out Apostles?
Neat way to look at our increasing diet sizes: compare the sizes of plates and food, and ratio of bread to meats/veggies in paintings of the Last Supper going back 1000 years :o)
Result:
"Over the course of the millennium, the Wansinks found that the entrees depicted on the plates laid before Jesus' followers grew by about 70%, and the bread by 23%.
"As entree portions rose, so too did the size of the plates -- by 65.6%."

"A team of scientists led by Dr Iain Brownlee and Prof Jeff Pearson have found that dietary fibre in one of the world's largest commercially-used seaweed could reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body by around 75 per cent.

Fair policies for the obese on airlines?
With a the "obesity epidemic" clashing against airlines' struggles to remain profitable, and passengers frustrations at paying through the nose and being sat on by larger seatmates, this is becoming a huge issue: how do you accommodate "passengers of size" in a way that doesn't ostracize the passenger in question, but is fair to other passengers and doesn't force people to subsidize the tickets of others? One event that brought this to the forefront was when director Kevin Smith was kicked off a Southwest flight - he'd purchased 2 seats as he acknowledges he's large enough to benefit from
