Good summary of the problem with record companies, CD's/DVD's and licensing:

"Let us walk through my most recent purchase. I strolled into the store, located the CD I was after, paid for it in cash and left. At no stage was I asked to sign a licensing agreement - not even a post-sale agreement like those for software. It was a simple transaction of cash for a physical product.

”No,” cries the music industry, ”you are bound by the licensing agreement that you did not sign and that we cannot produce for inspection.”

Politics and Media as in Basketball?

I read this article and couldn't help but think of the complaints of media bias over the last few years...

Surprise, surprise - tech the media industry tried to kill is now helping it

“The DVR was going to kill television,” said Andy Donchin, director of media investment for the ad agency Carat. “It hasn’t.”

Against almost every expectation, nearly half of all people watching delayed shows are still slouching on their couches watching messages about movies, cars and beer. According to Nielsen, 46 percent of viewers 18 to 49 years old for all four networks taken together are watching the commercials during playback, up slightly from last year. Why would people pass on the opportunity to skip through to the next chunk of program content?

100 Years of Media Industry Luddism

Variations of these arguments live on today and are used against Google Books, mp3s, ebooks, online movie distribution, etc.  I'm sure that those will prove to be as evil as the gramophone and copymachine... if only we would learn to listen to the Cassandra that is the media industry...
