FDA re-evaluating plastics in food contact
I'm all for technology, but I like my tech at a distance... I don't understand why some people adopt new technology into their food and bodies so readily and so blindly - e.g. genetically modified foods, nanotech, cosmetic surgery, etc. This latest article is about the FDA re-evaluating its position on the health consequences of a chemical present in many plastics used in food storage (BPA). They now are concerned about the effect of this chemical on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children. I like to think that the regulators just go on the best science available... after the Bush years, though, I wonder whether political considerations caused them to sit on this information at all (e.g. I'm sure this can't be good for all the industries that are involved in plastic production, and I'd bet those companies donate more to republicans than democrats...) This may seem like a conspiracy theory, but I think this is exactly why the Bush administration did everything within its powers to throw a wrench in the climate change response, and why they did everything possible to weaken environmental and endangered species protections.
